"The traffic and landscapes encountered while running errands, how areas of the home are treated, and the moods of people engaged in banal tasks influence my life, and therefore, art. Recreating these scenes give permanence to the undervalued but there is an unapparent irony in my studio practice: I escape certain domestic tethers while at the easel, yet there remains before me the scenery of my life: being stuck at a red light, dishes stacked by the sink, and shopping in second hand stores. My work concentrates on the very scenes of domestic life that take me away from the studio and yet somehow this oscillation yields a stabilizing effect on me and my work. Through oil painting, I offer the viewer a remote glimpse into my personal life, exposing the delicacy of monotony and repetition in regard to domestic affairs and how I choose to see a beautiful life amidst the mundane." - Julie Crews
"When walking through a landscape, one notices how the view changes with each step. Inspired by the mood of the lights, memories of a place and the shapes of spaces, I paint glimpses of landscapes filled with trees, rocks, rivers and skies. Walking through life, one might notice seasons change and people aging. Emphasizing these changes in pattern I correlate light and time passing. My approach to a painting starts with a specific place and time, typically captured by a camera, then using a brush or palette knife I shape details in paint. This process emphasizes the brilliancy of an atmospheric landscape and entices the viewer to explore the work from all angles, much like one explores a landscape. Noting the movements of the sun, my paintings live in contrast to a world reliant upon artificial light. Marking the changes in light and land highlights the moments of realization one is growing older." - Liz Zanca
Rhea Gary, a native of Louisiana and a Birmingham, Alabama resident, holds a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Fine Arts degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She also studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and with well-known American artists. "Painting is my way to call attention to the beauty and uniqueness of our earth and the urgent need to protect and restore it. My interest is not in nuances of land and sky but in using color to bring about an emotional joyful statement of place."
- Rhea Gary
