Louisiana State Sales Tax Holiday
Whether you are selling merchandise or shopping for items, August 3rd and 4th have been designated by the State of Louisiana as State Sales Tax Holidays. On August 3 and 4, shoppers can make purchases free of the 4% state sales tax. The exemption applies to the first $2500 of the purchase price of each eligible item. This means that if you purchase a $2600 portable generator and a $850 television, you will not have to pay the 4% state sales tax on the first $2500 of the generator (however you will pay the 4% sales tax on the $100 that is over the $2500 eligibility) and you will not have to pay the 4% state sales tax on the television. The state sales tax holiday does not include purchases of vehicles, meals, admission to events, nor taxable services such as hotel occupancy or rentals.
You will still pay all local sales taxes, unless the local taxing body allows its own exemption.
So this will be a great time for Back-To-School shopping, getting an early start on Christmas gifts, or just making general purchases.
MERCHANTS… don’t forget to set up your cash register systems to meet the requirements of this State Sales Tax Holiday.
