Slow Egg, a art exhibition
Slow Egg is a two-person exhibition by Chad Serhal and Kathryn Agnes Baczeski, artists who have been in dialogue with each other's work for eleven years. The show brings together Serhal's collage-based practice in paper, sound, and video with Baczeski's clay-based sculpture and installation, pairing two distinct material languages built around transformation, memory, and change. Serhal works in layers of visual language that mirror our postmodern lives, using cultural references and symbols to build autobiographical imagery informed by Midwestern art, film, and music culture. His research considers how much of the present moment functions as a collage of the past, taking hold of identifiable images and transforming them into a unified aesthetic through techniques drawn from cartooning, graffiti tagging, movie posters, and concert flyers, evoking Dada, Surrealism, and American Expressionism. Baczeski's work explores the ongoing relationship between body and clay, two materials that are always shifting and in flux. She uses raw clay to give external form to internal experience, treating the body as a vessel for exploring physical existence. Her recent work responds to an involuntary internal transformation, paralleling the way she mutates clay from one form into another to reveal new creation — work that unfolds, replicates, and grows through overlapping evolutions. Chad Serhal grew up in the Midwest United States. He earned a certificate in audio engineering from the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona (2005), a BA in art and film studies from Indiana University Bloomington (2016), and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Florida, Gainesville (2021). He is currently an Instructor in the Department of Visual Art and Design at Southeastern Louisiana University. Kathryn Agnes Baczeski is a clay-based artist and Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. Her teaching and creative practice span sculpture, installation, performance art, and immersive experience. She holds a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Connecticut (2009) and an MFA in Ceramics from Indiana University (2016). Her residencies and exhibitions include Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark, NCECA 2023 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, Peters Valley School of Craft in Layton, New Jersey, and the Iowa Ceramics and Glass Studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
